What makes Hawke’s Bay special?
Hawke’s Bay is one of the most picturesque wine regions in New Zealand, and its rolling vineyards are surrounded by misty rainforests and beautiful coastal landscapes. With a long history of winemaking dating back to the early 1800s, Hawke’s Bay wines are some of the most highly regarded in the world.
The region has a richly diverse agricultural landscape that includes dairy farming and onion growing, which have both produced world-renowned wines. Plus, the region’s unique microclimate – sheltered from the colder north Pacific winds – allows for grapes to be grown in cooler weather than elsewhere in New Zealand.
As a result, there are an abundance of rich, complex wines from Hawke’s Bay that are definitely worth trying!
Evening on the Town
Starting around 5pm, Napier’s CBD comes alive with locals and tourists alike. There are plenty of places to grab a bite or a drink, but our favorites were The Anteater and The Green Kiwi.
For the wine lover, there’s definitely no shortage of sights and sounds in Napier. Our favorite spot for a drink was The Wine House, which has a great atmosphere and knowledgeable staff. The Wine House also offers tastings of local wines, so you can get a real sense of what’s available in Napier.
For food, we had some amazing experiences at both The Farmer’s Daughter and Tipping Point. At The Farmer’s Daughter, we were blown away by the freshness of the food and the great flavors – everything from the fried chicken to the risotto was delicious! At Tipping Point, the arancini (a type of Italian rice dumpling) were a real hit with the whole family. In terms of value for money, both spots couldn’t be beat – we left feeling full but not wallet-heavy!
Major wine producers in Napier
The Napier region has a long and proud history as one of New Zealand’s premier wine producing areas. The grapes grown in the area are some of the country’s most renowned, with wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah being produced here. Food is also integral to the Napier experience and there are many restaurants showcasing both local and international cuisine. Forte’s Wine Bar
Much like Napier, Hawke’s Bay has its fair share of wineries, from large operations to boutique producers. A great way to visit them all and get a taste for their wines is on a wine and food tour. Here, we take you on such a tour of our local favorite, Forte’s Wine Bar.
Forte’s focuses exclusively on New Zealand wines, with a diverse range that spans both red and whites. We love their explanation of the region’s wine growing and viticulture, as well as their knowledge of each specific wine. Our host was able to recommend several great dishes to pair with our wines too- everything from fresh seafood to hearty mains.
We really enjoyed our experience at Forte’s Wine Bar and would highly recommend a wine and food tour here if you’re in the area. Not only will you have the chance to learn about the wines made in Napier and Hawke’s Bay, but you’ll also uncover some delicious regional favorites!
Wedge Winery is a family winery located in the town of Kawakawa on the North Island of New Zealand. The winery was founded in 1978 by Gary and Lyn Wedge and features a wide range of wines, from sparkling wines to dry red wines.
The winery has a number of vineyards, including a 37 hectare estate planted with Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. They also have a smaller vineyard planted with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The winery produces around 185,000 bottles per annum.
The winery house and tasting room are both open for tours, and include a wine cellar with over 7600 bottles. There is also a restaurant open for lunch and dinner, which stocks the winery’s wines as well as items from the garden and kitchen.
Wedge Winery is well known for its wine tastings, which are held on Fridays at 2pm. Tickets are $25 per person and include a glass of wine and a light lunch.
Harvey’s Oyster Bar
If you’re looking for a delicious seafood meal, look no further than Harvey’s Oyster Bar. Their oysters are fresh and succulent, and their menu offers a variety of seafood dishes, all prepared with the utmost care. They also serve up some great nibbles to help soak up all that booze!
River Cruise Gourmet Barge
